Four for Trane, originally recorded in 1964 and first released on Impulse! Records in 1965, is a landmark jazz album by tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp that reimagines compositions associated with John Coltrane through bold ensemble interplay and avant-garde expression. Featuring multi-timbral horn lines, shifting metres and emotionally charged improvisation from Shepp alongside Roswell Rudd (trombone), Alan Shorter (flugelhorn), John Tchicai (alto sax), Reggie Workman (double bass) and Charles Moffett (drums), the record stands as a defining moment in free jazz and post-bop evolution. A 2025 remastered vinyl reissue appears on 12 December 2025 as part of the Verve Vault Series.
