Marantz PM6007 + CD 70 + Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3 – The Classic CD System, Done Properly

Amplifier, CD player, speakers. The three-piece hi-fi that never went out of date, assembled from parts that belong together: the Marantz PM6007 integrated amplifier, the full-width Marantz CD 70 and a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3. The CD 70 carries the MODEL 70 DAC and HDAM circuitry, the PM6007 adds its own DAC and MM phono stage, and the 607 S3 gives the whole chain a modern, open top end. One order, one delivery, one evening to set up.

In This Setup

  • Marantz PM6007 – slimline integrated amplifier, 45 W per channel into 8 ohms, AK4490 DAC with optical and coaxial inputs, MM phono stage. Black.
  • Marantz CD 70 – full-width CD player with MODEL 70-grade DAC, HDAM output stage and hi-res USB-A playback. Black.
  • Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3 (pair) – compact 600 Series standmounts with Titanium Dome tweeter and Continuum cone driver. Black, Oak or White.

Why This Combination

  • Same house sound twice: HDAM modules in both Marantz boxes mean the amplifier and the player were tuned by the same ears.
  • Room to add a turntable: the PM6007 phono input is waiting when the record collection starts.
  • Digital in, analogue out: a TV or streamer plugs into the PM6007 optical input, so the system is not CD-only.

Set price includes all three products; speaker and interconnect cables are sold separately.

Discs, done properly.

Discs, done properly.

A Marantz amplifier and CD player with the compact 600 Series standmount.

A separates system built around the disc. The CD 70 reads CDs and hi-res files from a front USB-A socket, the PM6007 adds 45 W per channel, an AK4490 DAC and an MM phono stage, and the 607 S3 keeps the whole thing within a shelf's width. Buy it if your library is physical and you want it played back with care rather than convenience.

  • Full-width separates, shelf-friendly depth
  • 45 W per channel into 8 Ω
  • CD plus hi-res USB playback
  • MM phono stage built in
  • Continuum cone standmounts
The amplifier

Marantz PM6007

The PM6007 delivers 45 W per channel into 8 Ω and 60 W into 4 Ω, with an AK4490 DAC on the two optical and one coaxial inputs. There are five line-level RCA inputs, an MM phono stage and a Source Direct switch that takes the tone controls out of the path. A subwoofer pre-out and a headphone socket cover the rest.

  • 45 W × 2 (8 Ω), 60 W × 2 (4 Ω), damping factor 100
  • AK4490 DAC on two optical and one coaxial input
  • MM phono input, 2.2 mV/47 kΩ
  • Bass, treble and balance with Source Direct bypass
  • Speaker A/B terminals, subwoofer pre-out, headphone output

The CD player

Marantz CD 70

The CD 70 plays CDs and CD-R/RW, and takes FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD files from the front USB-A socket. Marantz's HDAM circuitry sits in the analogue output stage, and a discrete HDAM-SA2 headphone amplifier drives headphones directly. Gold-plated RCA plus optical and coaxial digital outputs give you a choice of how to feed the amplifier.

  • CD and CD-R/RW playback with hi-res USB-A on the front panel
  • HDAM analogue output stage, Marantz Sound Master tuning
  • Discrete HDAM-SA2 headphone amplifier with adjustable gain
  • Signal-to-noise 110 dB, THD 0.0010 %
  • Gold-plated RCA output plus optical and coaxial digital out

The speakers

Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3

The smallest 600 Series standmount pairs a 25 mm Titanium Dome tweeter with a 130 mm Continuum cone. The cabinet is a vented box with a rear Flowport, so it wants a little air behind it. At 300 mm tall it suits a shelf, a stand or a desk.

  • 25 mm Titanium Dome tweeter
  • 130 mm Continuum cone bass/midrange driver
  • 2-way vented-box cabinet with rear Flowport
  • 52 Hz – 28 kHz (±3 dB), 84 dB sensitivity
  • Black, White and Oak finishes with magnetic grilles

Setting it up

  1. Stack the CD 70 and PM6007 with a gap for airflow, or set them side by side on a shelf 44 cm wide or more.
  2. Link the CD 70 to the PM6007 with an RCA cable into the CD input, or use the coaxial output if you prefer the amplifier's AK4490 DAC to do the conversion.
  3. Run speaker cable from the Speaker A terminals to the 607 S3 pair, tweeters near ear height, with space behind for the rear Flowport.
  4. Add a turntable to the MM phono input and the television to one of the optical inputs.
  5. Press Source Direct for a straight path, or leave it off if you want the bass and treble controls.

Questions

Should I connect the CD 70 by RCA or coaxial?

Either works. RCA uses the CD 70's own analogue output stage; coaxial hands the conversion to the PM6007's AK4490 DAC. Try both — the difference is small and system-dependent.

Can I play hi-res files without a streamer?

Yes. The CD 70 has a front USB-A socket that plays FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD from a USB drive. Neither box has network streaming built in.

Is 45 W enough for the 607 S3?

Yes for small and medium rooms. Bowers & Wilkins recommends 30 – 100 W into 8 Ω for the 607 S3, and the PM6007 delivers 45 W per channel into that load.

Can I connect a turntable?

Yes. The PM6007 has an MM phono input with 2.2 mV sensitivity and 47 kΩ input impedance. A moving coil cartridge needs an external step-up.

Does this system stream from Spotify or TIDAL?

Not on its own. Neither the PM6007 nor the CD 70 has network streaming, so you would add a streamer or a Bluetooth receiver to one of the line inputs.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. The PM6007 has a subwoofer pre-out alongside its Speaker A/B terminals.

Does the CD 70 play SACD?

No. It plays CD and CD-R/RW discs, plus hi-res files from USB-A.
