Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2 on a dark reflective surface under warm light

Marantz · CINEMA Series 2

Three receivers. One room that disappears.

The CINEMA line has been rebuilt around a new 32-bit, eight-channel DAC that converts every channel at once. Same warm, unhurried Marantz character, now with Dirac Live room tuning, 1440p gaming passthrough and setup you can do from your phone.

What changed in Series 2

A new converter, and everything downstream of it

Series 2 is not a badge change. The conversion stage, the room correction, the video path and the setup interface are all new, and they are shared across all three receivers.

Conversion

32-bit, 8-channel DAC

Every channel is converted simultaneously rather than in sequence, which is what tightens placement in a full Atmos bed.

Room tuning

Dirac Live, wider than before

The 50 takes the full suite including Bass Control and Active Room Treatment. The 60 DAB and 70s are Dirac Live Ready as a paid upgrade.

Gaming

1440p and AMD FreeSync

Alongside 8K/60 and 4K/120 with VRR and ALLM, so a PC at 1440p passes through without dropping to the receiver's lowest common mode.

Setup

Web Control 2.0

Configure the receiver from a phone, tablet or laptop browser. No on-screen menus, so you are not stuck driving the setup from the sofa.

Diagnostics

HDMI Diagnostics 2.0

Checks each HDMI leg and reports what is failing, plus channel level monitoring so you can see which speaker is actually being fed.

Streaming

Updated HEOS, Roon Ready

Multi-room across HEOS devices, plus AirPlay 2 and Roon. Bluetooth LE Audio is scheduled to follow by update.

The line-up

Three sizes of the same idea

They share the converter, the video path and the interface. What separates them is amplifier count, power and how far the room correction goes.

The flagship

Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2

Nine channels of amplification with 11.4 processing, four independent subwoofer outputs and the only full Dirac Live licence in the line. It is also the only one that decodes Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced, and the only one with the Dolby Atmos Channel Expander and a bi-amped centre mode for dialogue.

The one with radio

Marantz CINEMA 60 DAB Series 2

Seven channels at 100 watts with the full 7.2 pre-out set, and the only receiver here with a DAB and DAB+ tuner built in. If you want the new converter and Atmos but also listen to broadcast radio, this is the one that does not need a second box.

The slim one

Marantz CINEMA 70s Series 2

Half the height of a normal receiver, so it fits the shelf that will not take a full-size chassis. Still seven channels, still Atmos and DTS:X, still Dirac Live Ready and a complete 7.2 pre-out set. The trade is power: 50 watts a channel, which suits a small or mid-sized room rather than a large one.

Side by side

Which CINEMA is right for your room?

Start with the room. Large room with height speakers and more than one subwoofer, take the 50. Normal living room, take the 60 DAB. Shallow shelf or a second room, take the 70s.

Sound and setup

Tuned by ear, then measured

The new 32-bit, eight-channel DAC converts all channels at the same moment instead of stepping through them. In practice that shows up as steadier imaging when a lot of objects are moving at once, which is exactly where older receivers smear.

Every model ships with Audyssey and a calibration microphone. The 50 adds the complete Dirac Live suite, including Bass Control across multiple subwoofers and Active Room Treatment. On the 60 DAB and 70s, Dirac Live Room Correction is available as a paid upgrade when you want it.

Web Control 2.0 puts the whole configuration in a browser on your phone or laptop. HDMI Diagnostics 2.0 tells you which link is failing rather than leaving you to swap cables, and channel level monitoring shows what each speaker is actually receiving.

All three have a full set of preamp outputs, so a receiver here can later become the processor in front of separate power amplifiers. Each also keeps a moving-magnet phono input, which is unusual at this end of the market.
