Marantz CINEMA 70s Series 2 + Bowers & Wilkins 606 S3 + ASW608 – 2.1 Cinema That Still Plays Music

A slim-line receiver, a pair of real hi-fi standmounts and a compact subwoofer: the 2.1 layout that suits most living rooms better than a bag of satellites. The Marantz CINEMA 70s Series 2 handles 8K video, Dolby Atmos decoding and HEOS streaming from a low-profile chassis, the Bowers & Wilkins 606 S3 does front-stage duty for films and stereo alike, and the ASW608 fills in below 40 Hz without taking over the room. Add centre and surrounds later – the receiver has the channels waiting.

In This Setup

  • Marantz CINEMA 70s Series 2 – 7.2-channel slim AV receiver, 50 W per channel, 32-bit 8-channel DAC, Dolby Atmos / DTS:X, Dirac Live Ready, HEOS. Black or Silver Gold.
  • Bowers & Wilkins 606 S3 (pair) – 600 Series standmounts with Titanium Dome tweeter and 6.5-inch Continuum cone. Black, Oak or White.
  • Bowers & Wilkins ASW608 – compact sealed subwoofer, long-throw 8-inch driver, 200 W Class D. Black.

Why This Combination

  • Two-channel first: the 606 S3 is a music speaker, so the same system that runs the film sounds right with a record on Sunday.
  • Room correction included: Dirac Live Ready on the receiver integrates the ASW608 with the standmounts.
  • Upgrade path built in: five spare amplifier channels for a centre, surrounds or height speakers from the same 600 Series.

Set price includes all three products; speaker and subwoofer cables are sold separately.

Cinema on a slim shelf.

Cinema on a slim shelf.

A 7.2-channel Marantz receiver started as a 2.1 system with 600 Series speakers and the ASW608.

A cinema set that starts small and has somewhere to go. The CINEMA 70s Series 2 is a slim 7.2-channel receiver with 8K HDMI, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, so the 606 S3 pair and the ASW608 subwoofer give you a serious 2.1 today with five channels of amplification still spare. It suits a media unit where a full-height receiver will not fit.

  • 7.2-channel receiver in a slim chassis
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X ready
  • 8K HDMI with eARC
  • Sealed 200 W subwoofer
  • Room for surrounds and height channels later

The subwoofer

Bowers & Wilkins ASW608

  • 200 W amplifier in a sealed, closed-box cabinet

Setting it up

  1. Place the 606 S3 pair either side of the screen on stands, tweeters near seated ear height, with the rear Flowport clear of the wall.
  2. Run speaker cable from the receiver's front left and right terminals, and a single RCA from Subwoofer 1 pre-out to the ASW608's line input.
  3. Connect sources to the HDMI inputs and the television to the HDMI output marked eARC; use an Ultra High Speed cable for 8K or 4K/120.
  4. Plug in the supplied Audyssey microphone, run MultEQ XT from the listening position and let it set levels, distances and crossover.
  5. Add surrounds and height channels later — the receiver has seven channels of amplification and full 7.2 pre-outs.

Questions

Why a 7.2-channel receiver for a 2.1 system?

Because it leaves room to grow. You start with front left, right and a subwoofer, and five channels of amplification stay free for surrounds and Atmos height speakers.

Will this fit a shallow media unit?

The CINEMA 70s Series 2 is 109 mm high and 373 mm deep, which is slimmer than a full-size receiver, but leave ventilation space above it.

Do I need a special HDMI cable?

For 8K/60 or 4K/120 use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Older High Speed cables will still carry 4K/60 to the television.

Is Dirac Live included?

No. Audyssey MultEQ XT is included and runs with the supplied microphone; Dirac Live is a paid upgrade on this receiver.

How should the subwoofer be connected?

One RCA cable from a subwoofer pre-out to the ASW608's line input is the simplest route. The ASW608 also has speaker-level binding posts and a 12 V trigger if you need them.

Where should the crossover be set?

Let Audyssey MultEQ XT set it during calibration. The 606 S3 runs to 52 Hz (±3 dB), so the receiver typically hands over to the subwoofer in the 60 – 80 Hz region.

Can I play music on this too?

Yes. The receiver has HEOS, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, Bluetooth and an MM phono input for a turntable.

Is one subwoofer enough?

For most rooms, yes. The receiver has two subwoofer pre-outs if you later add a second ASW608 for smoother bass across seats.
