Shedding recent vignettes of R&B, disco and funk, Hole Erth is a confounding direction for Toro y Moi which takes him close to the indie rock of his youth. The album also has a healthy dose of nostalgia lyrically, as wiry guitar parts compliment his trademark rapping, and even pop-punk chanting, which divulges the woes of teenage angst.
